Bath tubs - from architect's drawing to finished installation
The block is a carefully chosen to show the best markings and exclude any possible flaws. It is then cut roughly to shape and marked out for the middle to be hollowed out. At this point the block can weigh as much as 5 Tonne. The centre is then hollowed out to within 10mm of the finished surface. The outside is then cut and at this point the carved bath takes shape. Once this is satifactory the inside of the bath is finished and the bath is ready for drilling for waste hole, overflow and tap holes if required. To place the bath in it's final position in the house it can be lowered through the roof, passed through a window, and in one case, a wheeled cage was made to move the bath on it's side from the balcony, through the bedroom, down the hall and left into the bathroom! The final bath weighs between 750kg and 2000kg.
